Kejhova, Natalie ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Miessler, Jan (referee)
Covid-19 did not only take over the lives of citizens in 2020, it also took over the media worldwide and the Czech Republic is no exception. Journalists always held the responsibility of portraying information to the public on major events. However during the first wave of the pandemic in particular journalists were seen as having a new sense of power which was that their words could influence the public's opinion on policies issued by the government like whether to wear a mask or not. The findings of this thesis showed that the publication Mladá fronta Dnes overall published articles that were informative and matter of fact whereas the publication Hospodářské noviny resulted in being more critical to the regulations that were issued by the government resulting in more of a discussion. Overall this thesis looked at how media frames are used by journalists in articles to portray particular ideological standpoints. Keywords Pandemic, Coivid-19, Media, Media Frames

Kruhlova, Olena ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
Master's Thesis COVID-19 pandemic in selected Ukrainian media gives an overview of the Ukrainian media system with a focus on media ownership and its outcome in the end publications. By choosing three different types of ownership: privately owned media, pro- governmental media and opposition-owned media, we took a look at how the media published articles about COVID-19 at the very beginning of the pandemic. The methodological basis of this work was framing research, which is meant to uncover trends and the ways in which information about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is presented through the analysis of headlines in the chosen online media sources. The results of the framing research revealed that the frames are indeed present in the materials of the chosen media sources at the beginning of the pandemic. The representation of the frames was discovered to be different from the initial assumptions. The main discoveries revealed how privately owned media are more prone to fearmongering and hope frames, while the politically connected media were statistically less prone to publish anything politically coloured. The results of the study highlight the importance of media responsibilities during the time of medical crisis and how the general public must be critically aware of the dangers of...
State of emergency in the Czech Republic as an oportunity for political communication
Srbová, Barbora ; Shavit, Anna (advisor) ; Rosenfeldová, Jana (referee)
The thesis focuses on the political communication and media-related aspects of the first two waves of the coronavirus pandemic in the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic overcame the spring wave of the pandemic in 2020 almost exemplarily, despite low preparedness and lack of protective equipment. This changed completely with the arrival of the second wave, when Czechia found itself among the worst affected countries. The aim of this paper is to explore one of the possible causes of this development. The thesis builds on the assumption that 1) political communication and media messages directed at citizens can - especially in times of crisis when news messages and politicians receive increased attention - have a perceptible impact on citizens' behaviour, their decision-making and their interpretation of unfolding events, and 2) that inconsistency of information, as well as inconsistency in its interpretation and framing, can have a negative impact on citizens' trust in the state and in the measures taken. Building on these assumptions, the paper uses a content analysis to examine how the COVID-19 disease pandemic was framed by the government and the media during the first and second waves of the pandemic, and tests the hypothesis that the degree of divergence between government and media framing of...
Media Bias and Framing Analysis of Local Media and Foreign Based Media coverage on the case of " Rohingya: Gambia files case against Myanmar at International Court of Justice"
Soe, Phoo Pyae Pyae Soe ; Shavit, Anna (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
This study offers the framing analysis of local and foreign-based media on the coverage of "Rohingya: Gambia files case against Myanmar at ICJ" for over nine months period and examines the bias in their new contents and attention to the case. Evaluation of the number of coverage published by each media shows that local media do not pay as much attention as foreign-based media, and undermines the seriousness of the issue. Moreover, the finding highlights that the news representation of local media is evidently in favor of the Myanmar government in support of iconic national leader - Aung San Suu Kyi while abetting in covering up the violent action of the Myanmar military. Findings also suggest that foreign- based media covered the case most with genocide frame whereas self-defense frame was the most popular one in the coverage of local media. This study employed comparative content analysis to detect the bias and observe the different framings of media. Keywords: Bias, Frames, media frames, Framing theory, Myanmar, Rakhine, Bangladesh.
